Introduction to Network Functions Virtualization (NFV)

(96 customer reviews)

Telco Cloud & Network Functions Virtualization (NFV ):

Virtualization refers to the creation of virtual machine that can virtualize all the hardware resources, including processors, memory, storage, and network connectivity. Physical hardware resources can be shared by one or more virtual machines.

The course covers terminologies that need to be understood related to virtualization concepts. These terminologies are:

  • Server
  • Hypervisor
  • Guest OS
  • Application
  • N I C
  • Virtual Machine (or VM)

Course Description

Types of Virtualization :

Based on hardware or the functions that is being virtualized, the different types of virtualization are:

  • Server Virtualization:
  • Application Virtualization
  • Hosted Virtualization
  • Storage Virtualization, and
  • Network Virtualization

The other half of the course deals with Network Functions Virtualization (NFV). Virtualizing networking components, such as a switch, router or a firewall is called as network functions virtualization. Once again it would reduce the hardware costs and helps in easy management.

The two objects of Network Functions Virtualization are:

Device virtualization: In this physical device (or nodes) in the network are virtualized, such as Data Plane virtualization, Control Plane virtualization, and Management Plane virtualization.

Data path virtualization: It Virtualizes communication path between network access points, such as Links virtualization.

The course also covers NFV architecture : Briefly,

VNF (or Virtual Network Functions): is the basic block in NFV Architecture. It is the virtualized network element. For example when a router is virtualized, we call it Router VNF; another example is base station VNF.

EMS (or Element Management System): is the element management system for VNF. This is responsible for the management of VNF operation, in the same way as physical network elements are managed by their respective EMS of VNFs.

The main advantages of Network virtualization are:

  • Infrastructure utilization
  • Scalability
  • Agility
  • Resilience
  • Security

Network functions deployed as applications on a virtual machine are:

  • Routing
  • Firewalling
  • Load balancing
  • Network Address Translation (NAT)
  • Access Gateway
  • WAN acceleration
  • QoE monitoring
  • Deep packet inspection (DPI)
  • Broadband Remote Accessing (BRAS)
  • Session Boarder Controlling

Network functions deployed in NFV are:

  • Provided in the form of Virtual Machine Appliances
  • Deployed on demand on virtualization servers

Apart from all these, participants will learn about Network Functions Virtualization Infrastructure, Virtualization Layers, NFV Orchestrator and open stack software used for implementation of the virtualization concepts.

Welcome to explore the concepts mentioned above related to the Telco Cloud and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV).
